Video Problem Solution: Prob. 6-89

November 6th, 2007 · No Comments

This is a cold one, and even though the solution muddles about a little bit, it’s worth your time to stick with it. Especially through the part with the FBDs of each member of the structure. In particular, there are two important pieces of advice highlighted in this solution:

  • It’s useful to draw each member’s FBD first, then consider how they fit together (remember the dashed blue lines?), and only then start writing equations. As pointed out in the video, contemplating the path you will take with the equations is useful, because…
  • …in these types of problems, it often comes down to making a good choice of how to write your moment equation. There is a fair amount of discussion in this video about how to choose the moment equation for each FBD, and I think it’s clear that there are good choices and better choices. I try to describe how to choose the moment equation which will accelerate your path to the final solution.

So there you have it. If it sounds a little disorganized, it’s because I didn’t solve this ahead of time. So hopefully I was able to articulate my thought process, and as it unfolds I hope you can gain some insight to apply to your own problem solving in preparation for the exam.
