Some general guidelines and rules for podcast production

November 6th, 2007 · No Comments

I’ve gotten a few questions about specific details, so here goes:

  • No video. However, you can use an image sequence if you like. For instance, the opening satellite image part of my podcast on The Palm is actually an image sequence of like 75 images each appearing for 1/10 of a second. I forget the details, but you can use image sequences if you like.
  • If you use GarageBand (and you probably should), be sure to control file size using the ideas presented in the quick video below. PS: sorry about the aspect ratio of the video–it’s because of the file compression.

  • If you do it correctly, your final podcast should be on the order of 1 MB per minute, which means your total file might be about 5-7 MB (perfect for email).
  • If your focus changes slightly between now and when you finish the final product, that’s fine. In fact it’s expected. The storyboard is meant to give you a good head start on the process, and I fully expect it to change a little bit as you go along.
  • Use of copyrighted stuff. Essentially all of the materials you use will be protected by copyright. That’s why it’s important (crucial!) to list citations of where you got the images and other information from. The above video shows you how to integrate live hyperlinks into GarageBand, and I urge you to use that technique. If you like, you can use a credits slide at the end of the podcast for things like music credits or other things that didn’t fit on the slides with live hyperlinks. Part of your grade for this project will be how well you cite your sources, so you must take it seriously.
  • Grading. You will fill out a peer review form alot like this one (which is from last year). This form shows you what the grading criteria will be, so keep it in mind as you construct your podcast.
  • Winners of the contest. We will have four categories: Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and People’s Choice. The winners of the contest (as chosen by our largely peer-reviewed process) will be given extra credit points on their final course grade. Best Picture gets (+2) points per team member, the others all get (+1) point per team member. How’s that for incentive?
