Module 29 podcast

November 5th, 2007 · No Comments

This is the introduction to friction, and before the lecture today we did some small experiments. We introduced the notion of multi-valued STATIC friction, in which the sticking friction force assumes a value just large enough to ensure equilibrium–no more and no less. The video below illustrates this point using the classical inclined plane problem. We also discussed and did a demo of the tip/slip problem, which is reinforced by several slides in the lecture. The point here is that the relevant tools for Chapter 8 on friction continue to be FBDs and equilibrium concepts.
