This assignment is due on Friday Sept. 28 at 4 pm. We have several problems from Chapter 4, all of which are focused on issues of moments, couples, and “equivalence”. You’ll recall that we discussed the definition of equivalence in Module 9. You MUST become comfortable with the idea of moments, couples, […]

Student solution to Problem 4-39
September 21st, 2007 · No Comments
This is a nice solution to Prob. 4-39, which we discussed in class on 9/19, from Jennifer Diggs. She could have also done this problem using a position vector from B to C, then writing the moment as a cross product of rBC x F. Anyone want to quickly put together this solution?

Today’s prepared lecture was short and sweet. Well, at least short. I would encourage you to review slide #3 at least once so that you get this picture about our choice of the vector r. We really can choose it to be any vector from the axis of interest to the line […]

The material on cross products in this one is on the one hand pretty straight forward and intuitive. Moments/torques take translational forces (push or pull) and turn them into rotational action. Easy enough. But on the other hand, the mathematical formulation of moments using cross products can be a bit confusing. […]

Due date is Friday Sept. 21 at 4 pm. These problems are all from Chapter 3 and will reinforce your understanding of vectors in addition to challenging your understanding of particle equilibrium.
Problems: 3-10, 3-19, 3-33, 3-36, 3-45, 3-48, 3-56
Notes:
Prob. 3-39 is not assigned for homework, but is nonetheless a very nice problem […]

This is the problem we looked at in lecture on Sept. 12 (Module 7). We had some good discussion in class, talk about it a bit, and then I received several students solutions. They all look pretty good. You can see them here, here, here, and here. If you really like […]

Today’s module focuses pretty specifically on (i) FBD construction, and (ii) developing equilibrium expressions directly from the FBDs. This is a very under-appreciated idea: that the equilibrium equations and FBDs work together and one flows from the other. So, drawing FBDs is not just some form of engineering hazing…instead, it’s the basis […]

Here it is. All problems are from Chapter 2, and the due date and time is Friday 9/14 at 4 pm.
The assignment is: 2-95, 2-96, 2-100, 2-108, 2-118, 2-121
As usual, use this post as a threaded discussion about the homework, post questions and answers, and generally help each other out.

This was another futuristic lecture which I sent to you Friday morning. I believe most of the stuff in this one is review of topics you covered in physics, but it’s probably worth a quick look to remind you of the key issues. In particular, the usage of dot products to project force […]

It’s like looking into the future…here’s tomorrow lecture, today. I recorded it on the plane, so the audio is a little sketchy. But I think the important points are made on slide 4-5 and 4-6, which tell a nice story about unit (position) vectors, and on slide 4-10 which tells a good story […]
