The class has spoken! Exam 1 is going to be on Wednesday October 10, from 7-9 pm in a location to be determined. This is certainly not going to meet everyone’s needs, so if you have a HARD conflict, please let me know ASAP and we will schedule a different time for you.
Some Q&A:
- What’s the definition of HARD conflict? It’s got to be something reasonably academic and/or firm in its timing. Another class, lab session, or something, plus work commitments if you’ve got them, are all reasonable. Mandatory practice or study hall for varsity athletes seems okay too. More social activities like group meetings, IM sports, etc. are not defined as HARD.
- Why can’t we do the exam in class? Because a 50-minute exam in this class would be very challenging for all of us. I can only ask 2 questions at most, which means each problem is worth 1/2 the exam’s credit. Plus the time constraint is too severe for 50 minutes. I generally prefer 2 hour exams, with 4 problems ranging from reasonably straight forward to a bit challenging.
- What’s the exam format? 4 problems, all from our textbook. So, the more problems you do to prepare, the better your chances of having seen one or more of the problems before.
- Can we bring anything to the exam? Sure. Pencil. Eraser. Calculator. One 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. You can write whatever you want on that sheet. For exam 1, you can write only on one side of the paper. (For exam 2, you get both sides). One request: please, please, please, pretty please with sugar on top, use a pencil and eraser. Don’t use a pen.
Let’s use this post as an open thread for any exam-related discussion.

I was going over material for the exam and I came up with an iTunes question. I found myself having to redownload all the old Podcasts because although I have mine on automatic update, it only will play the most recent lecture. I’m confused why it says (10…the number of downloaded podcasts) beside the icon on the left hand menu in iTunes if I can’t access them. Is there a way to access the old ones? Thank you.

Also, I had an exam conflict question and sent emails to two email addresses I had for Professor Berger…berger@virginia.edu and ejb9z@virginia.edu….but I have not received a response. I feel like I might have the wrong email address, does anyone have another one? Thanks.

For iTunes, I think there is a setting somewhere in your iTunes account for how far back in time it goes to get episodes. Remember that you can always go to the blog and download them manually, then just import them into iTunes.
For suggested problems, I’m going to throw it back to you and say: consider all the problems we have done in class, and all the HW problems, then do more problems like them. If you do problems without answers in the back, drop by my office and we can look up the answers together.
