This solution should be good inspiration for how to do couple moment calculations. This one is good because the approach has to be pretty thorough to take care of the 3-D nature of the problem. The hardest part of this one is the trigonometry to determine the relative position vector between the forces.

Announcements from today’s class
September 18th, 2006 · No Comments
From today:
Homework solutions will be posted on TOOLKIT, not on this blog. I can’t find a good way to protect PDF files the way we have the podcasts protected. So we’ll just post them on Toolkit and forget about it.
If you want more good examples of equivalence calculations, look at problems […]

Module 10 independent study podcast
September 16th, 2006 · 4 Comments
What did you do for homecoming? I constructed an independent study podcast just for you. Please have a look before class on Monday so that we can dive into a good problem session.
I will also solicit feedback on this approach, which frees up the entire class meeting time for problem solving. Let […]

Module 9 podcast

This module contains some really important information–reduction to equivalent loads–and some cases which are less important (wrenches). However, all of this is excellent practice using vectors and manipulating them in various ways. While reduction of a set of forces to an equivalent wrench is sometimes useful, it’s not something you will do every […]

iPods in the classroom
September 15th, 2006 · No Comments
Some of you might be interested in this news item from two days back on using iPods in higher education. These are all great uses of the technology, but perhaps you noticed that most of the media coverage of this sort of thing does not examine uses in science and engineering. So you […]

Vyew session is now closed…
September 13th, 2006 · 3 Comments
We just finished our Vyew session, and it seemed somewhat productive. I left the notes posted on the meeting site, so feel free to go back later and save or download them. We’ll leave this as an open thread in case anyone wants to comment on the session…
Also, as always, if you missed […]

Module 8 podcast

Here it is. The discussion on the principle of moments is kind of long, but there are alot of subtle issues to consider. I hope you replay the podcast and focus on the different interpretations of the principle. Also, the couple moment content will be extended in the next module, so please […]

Video solution, problem 3-46
September 11th, 2006 · No Comments
This video solution narrates the process of solving problem 3-46 from beginning to end. It’s a nice template to use for your solutions to homework problems due later this week, and I think the spirit of the solution (orderly, step-by-step, neat, etc.) is something worth striving for as well. The commentary also describes […]

Module 7 podcast
September 11th, 2006 · No Comments
Module 7 introduced the concepts and theories surrounding moment calculations and cross products. Then we did the live demo of the torque wrench, and anecdotal feedback so far is that the live demo was quite useful. I will try to find an actual torque wrench for class on Wednesday, and we can do […]
