September 29th, 2006 · No Comments

We talked about this in class today…
Frank Gehry is known for unusual, abstract, stunning, and expensive architecture. Here’s proof that sometimes you can get the resources together to make buildings out of titanium.

Exam information and open thread

September 29th, 2006 · No Comments

Here is some information of interest about the exam, which will be help at 7 pm on Wed. 10/4 in E303 Thornton Hall:

Content is Ch. 1-4. Note that given the general confusion about wrenches, we will not have any questions on the exam like 4-137. Also, we have not had homework on […]

Module 13 podcast

September 27th, 2006 · No Comments

Today’s meeting contained only two basic topics, and the issue of constraints and redundancy is actually pretty important. What you really need to understand is that there is both a physical and a mathematical way to interpret the situation. So review this podcast, read your book, and then we will do some problems […]

Notes from today’s class meeting

September 25th, 2006 · No Comments

I hope that today’s meeting emphasized that even within a well-defined problem solving framework (like our 5 steps to a FBD), there is plenty of room for choices about specific items. Especially when we actually write equilibrium equations, we usually have some latitude to choose things like moment summation points. The moral of […]

Module 12 podcast

September 22nd, 2006 · No Comments

The really important part of today’s class meeting was the FBD problem we did, which emphasized the difference between internal and external forces, and the fact that whether a force is internal or external depends upon the nature of the FBD. This is a critically-important concept that we will continue to work on in […]

Vyew session last night…

September 21st, 2006 · No Comments

It was a failure of technology, not of the will of the people. The conference call software was completely worthless and the session never happened. So, if you log on to Vyew, uh I mean view, the session notes, there’s really nothing there.
I will work on a Plan B that we can use […]

Video problem solution, Prob. 4-115

September 20th, 2006 · No Comments

This is a good, basic problem on equivalent loading in which we replace several externally applied loads by a single equivalent force. The only trick is that we need to place that force at a very specific location so that it provides moment equivalence. Have a look and feel free to post comments.

Module 11 podcast

September 20th, 2006 · No Comments

Today’s module contains two really important components:

An FBD procedure containing 5 steps. Follow these steps and you will be well on your way to mastering FBD’s.
A discussion of how to model support reactions in FBD’s. Again, approach this carefully and you can’t go too far wrong.

Have a look, and as always […]
