Schools
Spanish remains the language of the outside world. Zinacantecos always speak Tzotzil, a Maya language, among themselves. Very few adult women speak any Spanish and only recently have many girls attended school regularly. While literacy and ability to deal with non-Indians are key qualifications for political leadership, most men speak only the rudimentary Spanish necessary for the marketplace.
