The Garnett/Sewell House

We're in Sugar Hollow, outside White Hall, Virginia, about fourteen miles west of Charlottesville, near the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The house we're living in [House, front view] was built by my brother-in-law Joe Garnett about ten years ago; he moved into town in the summer of '00 to minimize commuting (thirty-mile roundtrips two or three times a day). It's located on the flank of Bucks Elbow Mountain, on the south side of Moorman's River, and is approached by a 1/3-mile gravel driveway that runs through a horse pasture and then steeply uphill through the woods, passing some rustic sights [pond] [woodpile] and some not-so-rustic ones [abandoned van].* The property totals 20 acres, mostly wooded [view through woods to north], but with enough cleared area [meadow below house] to keep me busy wielding a mowing scythe (and a 6 HP push mower where the terrain permits) during growing season.** The house is protected by two fierce guardians [Maggie the dog] [Louie the dog].*** On hazy summer days, looking to the northwest from the back of the house [back of house], it's obvious how the Blue Ridge got its name.

*Update 2/2002: the van is gone.
**Update 2/2001: with some embarrassment I note that we broke down and bought a great big 10.5 HP brushcutting mower to use when the jungle returns this year.
***Update 5/2004: Louie R.I.P. Aged about 95 in dog years, loved hiking in the woods to the end.
