Spring 2011
School of Architecture, Department of Urban and Environmental Planning
Prof. David L. Phillips, 128 Campbell Hall, dlp@virginia.edu
Graduate Planning and upper level undergraduate Planning majors will receive priority enrollment, however students from other disciplines throughout the University are welcome. Students should have a basic working knowledge of MS Windows operating system, University network system, Internet skills and some familiarity with ArcGIS. A review of Excel or data base management software concepts (Access) would be helpful.
This intermediate course will explore topics of Geographic Information Systems for Planners not addressed in PLAN 5120 or will extend basic topics. Examples include: Urban Data Models, Cartographic Representation, Spatial Analysis, Developing and Using Geographic Information Servers and Services, GeoDesign and Assessment, Network Analysis, 3D Visualization and Analysis, Mobile GIS.
Some time will be spent adapting to the new release of ArcGIS 10 Desktop and integrating that with other ArcGIS 10 tools.
Guest lectures will occur throughout the semester, some will be outside of regular class times. These will be academic or professional in nature. They will highlight how GIS is used in research and practice and how professionals manage GIS systems.
The course is intended for students who have previously studied GIS or who have minimal knowledge or experience with GIS in other classes or possibly through prior work experience. Students who are not certain if this course is right for them should consult the instructor. The course will involve hands-on work with tutorials, exercises and projects to demonstrate acquired skills in the various topics chosen.
Students will develop a small GIS project of their own choosing after the fundamentals of GIS have been mastered.
Maps are intended to communicate information some of which derives from analysis. The cartographic quality of course products will receive critical attention.
This is a learn by doing course so exercises and projects will receive the following weight:
