Shame on Them
I should probably preface all future discussions on my web pages by saying that I am a very proud American. It's fair to ask why in today's day and age. But like most, my pride stems from a sense of history rooted in the concepts of freedom and autonomy ... as well as our nation's incredible achievements in the areas of technology (go Space Ship One!). I'll probably have to write another note some day about why I love my country so much. I suspect being born on July 5th has had some subtle effect too.
So when I look at the political landscape today it stirs no small amount of anger inside me. It's the speeches that get me in particular: rhetoric for rhetoric's sake. Each side claims that the other is 100% wrong. If you stop and think for a moment, that's a huge insult to our collective american intelligence. I mean, a 3rd grade teacher will tell you that in any dispute between seven year olds, it's rarely all one's fault. I think the same goes for the current state of political affairs. Yet, there is no real discussion of any of the issues. Instead, it's nothing more than blame.
Have you ever had a serious heart-to-heart conversation with a loved one or close friend? You know, those very special moments when you both decide to peel away the nonsense and really try to get at the heart of the matter? Why aren't our political leaders doing this today? I know some of the reasons, but still. Very young men and women are giving their lives in Iraq, under the assumption that they are there for a good reason and under the direction of competent people. At the very least, their loss should motivate a more serious discussion of today's issues. But it doesn't seem to. It's so very important that we have a real discussion ... NOW!
So shame on them, for letting political ambition get in the way of something so very important in today's day and age. Shame on them for ignoring the key issues and trying to score political points. The net result is a polarized nation. Shame on them for polarizing us. Shame on them for helping to make this country something other than great.
