Text: An Introduction to Analysis by James Kirkwood, Waveland Press, 1995

Topics: Chapters 1 – 8

This is a theoretical course where we will prove the theorems from your Calculus courses.

Based on the material covered in Calculus I and II, this course introduces the audience to rigorous analysis. Starting with questions such as  "what are real numbers?"  We will go through the theory of single variable functions at a much deeper level than Calculus I and II. Maximum Value.

Final Exam:
The Final Exam is scheduled for Tuesday December 10, 1400-1700.

University Policy on Examination Schedules: Examinations are given only during the scheduled examination period, and faculty members are not authorized to change the announced times of their examinations.

Objectives: The goals of this course include:

1. Using an axiomatic approach, new concepts and theorems will be introduced.  The theory of single variable functions will be built up by rigorously proving theorems.

2. The students will learn to think and argue logically and will learn to read, understand, and construct rigorous mathematical arguments.  To give correct proofs of the standard theorems from Calculus, such as, A Continuous Function of a Closed Bounded Interval has a maximum value.

Tests and Homework: There are two tests and an exam. The two tests are each worth 28% of the grade while the exam is worth 34%. Homework and quizzes will be the remaining 10%.

Grading Policy: 100-90 = A, 89-80 = B, 79-70 = C, 69-60 = D, less than 60 = F. Pluses and minuses will be given for scores at the top and bottom of the respective interval at the instructor’s discretion.

Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend the class meetings.

Late Assignments: 10% will be deducted from each assignment which is 0-24 hours late; 20% when 24-48 hours late, and so forth.

Office Hours: Monday 13:00 - 14:00, Wednesday 12:00 - 13:00 and by appointment.
