Canoeing on the Shenandoah River

Canoeing on the Shenandoah

The Shenandoah River is
deservedly on the register of State Scenic Rivers, and there is access less than four miles from the Blandy Experimental Farm at Berry's Ferry below the US 50 bridge.  The North and South Forks of the Shenandoah meander northward along opposite sides of the Massanutten Mountain and join to form the main stem at Front Royal, VA.  From there the river flows below the western slope of the Blue Ridge as the water works its way to the Potomac at Harper's Ferry, WV.  The river offers beautiful views of the forested mountains as you maneuver your canoe or kayak through its riffles and pools.  It also offers some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Pictured here are Lindsey Parsons of Berea College in Kentucky and Jacob Elstein of Virginia Tech, both REU students at Blandy in the summer of 2005.
