Exploring West Virginia

Seneca Rocks

During their stay at the Blandy Experimental Farm, students often take the opportunity to explore nearby parts of West Virginia.  Historic Harpers Ferry is only 27 miles to the north, and the Potomac Highlands are only two hours away to the west.  The Potomac Highlands of West Virginia and the Monongahela National Forest are home to fabulous hiking and scenery including the Dolly Sods Wilderness and Spruce Knob, the highest point in the state at 4863 feet above sea level.  A must-see in the Highlands are the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Seneca Rocks, pictured here.  The town of Seneca Rocks hosts a world class rock-climbing school, and the cliffs attract hundreds of rock climbers every summer.  Visitors who are not up for a frontal assault can still enjoy the drama of Seneca Rocks by following the trails that lead from the South Fork Branch of the Potomac up to the top of the knife-edged cliffs.
