Hello, my name is Chong 翀 Xu 徐. Chong is the first name. In Chinese it means flying high. Unfortunately, it did not automatically make me a flying superman.

I was born and grew up in a small rural town in Zhejiang, a province located in southeast China next to Shanghai.

At the age of 16 I went to Zhejiang University for college. Zhejiang University is one of the best and biggest universities in China. It is located in Hangzhou, the capitol of Zhejiang province and a city that has been famous for its natural and cultural beauty for thousands of years. In college I majored in Biological Sciences and Technology.

After getting my B.S. degree I went to the Insitute of Molecular Agrobiology (Now ASTAR and Temasek Life Science Laboratory), National University of Singapore(NUS) to work as a research assistant officer and stayed for one year.

Singapore is a great city to live in but it's just a little too hot for my taste. Instead of staying in NUS I decided to come to the U.S.A. for gradschool. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Cell Biology (Graduate Program of Cell and Developmental Biology), University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va, working hard on my thesis project (read more about my research here)and looking forward to the next step of my career and life. Gradschool has been taking longer than I expected, and I am eager to go "out there" and apply what I have learned in school.

Over the years I have eventually realized that despite my love for science my strength doesn't lie in laboratory works. My current career plan is to find a place in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry somewhere between science and business. In the long run, I would like to run my own biotech company in China.

I love to meet new friends, having fun and try out all kinds of things (read more here). Some friends and I am holding a small seminar where we meet weekly to discuss science, technology and/or whatever interests us (I call this little seminar "Confucius In Everybody" since Confucius always believed that everybody can teach and learn.)

During 2003-2004, I served as the president of CSSS (Chinese Stuent&Scholar Society) here in UVa, where I met with a lot of friends. Together we tried our best to help local Chinese students and scholars.
