Bio
Carey Sargent is Doctoral Candidate in Sociology at the University of Virginia, who conducts research in the sociology of music and urban sociology and teaches in the areas of culture, theory, inequality and urbanism. Her dissertation concerns the commodification of local culture and its effects on cultural production and social inequailites in urban spaces. In it, she develops an analysis of Local Culture Movements, showing how cities, businesses and artists join forces to redevelop urban economies around the consumption of "local experience." Her case studies of music scenes in Charlottesville and Richmond Virginia focus in on issues of urban redevelopment, history and culture in the American South. The study connects to larger theoretical questions concerning the relationship between cultural prodcution and consumption in the era of late capitalism and digital technology.
