Biographical Sketch

Dr. Knospe (B.S. Aerospace, ‘84; Ph.D. Mechanical and Aerospace, ‘89, University of Virginia) joined the faculty of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia in 1989 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1997. His work has focused on the application of modern control theory to the active control of vibration, primarily in magnetic suspension systems. Dr. Knospe is the author of over two dozen archival papers and 40 conference publications. He was co-editor of IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology’s Special Issue on Magnetic Bearing Control and received Best Paper awards at both the 5th and 6th International Symposia on Magnetic Bearings (Kanazawa, Japan; Cambridge, Mass.). Dr. Knospe has performed extensive consulting services in this field for industry leaders and has taught several short courses in North America and Europe.
