PowerfulPoint or PowerPointless?
PowerPoint is one of the most widely used tools in the classroom, yet it is often used inappropriately, creating controversy over whether or not the program is actually beneficial to learning. The PowerPoint presentation I have created is an appropriate use of PowerPoint because it is an interactive learning activity. When using this PowerPoint in the classroom, the teacher would not simply be reading off slide after slide while students listened, or tried to listen, at their desks. Quite the contrary, students would be using the PowerPoint themselves and going through the slides at their own pace. This PowerPoint is not intended to be used as a crutch by the teacher when giving a lecture, rather its purpose is to engage students with the material they need to learn. This PowerPoint acts much like a WebQuest, allowing students to navigate the slides on a non-linear basis and to find out information on their own initiative. When students learn in this way, they are more likely to stay focused on the material and interested in it, which will increase their capacity to learn and retain the information presented. Unlike the poor PowerPoint presentations that are so commonly used today, this PowerPoint gives students a chance to experiment with and actively participate in the learning process, creating a positive experience for both students and teachers. |
