Course Overview
MUSI 394 was created as an opportunity for students to participate in the production of the Winter Raven, a large-scale multimedia performance piece that will be staged on Old Cabell Hall on March 28, 2003. Through helping produce this piece, students gain hands on experience with stage production, and learn about techniques of multimedia art and technology. Winter Raven is a work involving instrumental ensembles, dance, computer-generated surround sound, video, and theatrical staging and lighting. Due to the nature of the piece as an extreme example of multimedia integration, participants have the opportunity to work on the production from their own area of expertise, developing those skills, as well as expand into other areas and gain new skills.

Requirements and Grading
The nature of the work is collaborative and therefore groups will be formed to target specific areas of the production. Students can take part in as many groups as they wish, but each student must be involved in at least two areas, one of their expertise and another that is less familiar. In this way knowledge is shared between collaborative project-based activities. Within each group, teams will be formed to target specific areas. Each group will have a coordinator who will be in charge of organizing that aspect of the production.

Students are graded on involvement and successful completion of their group projects.

Progress reports are due on Feb 27, March 20 and final reports on April 4 (following the performance). The reports should detail exactly what activities you were responsible for in your groups and the things you learned (research activities, new media, etc.). They should also give critical assessment of the group at the present time -- how is it going? what needs to happen next? The report may in some cases include diagrams, drawings, etc. I’m very interested to see all these things! The class is over after the final reports are turned in. on April 4.
