Benjamin Yobp was born in 1988 and has lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for most of his life. Currently at the University of Virginia, Benjamin is pursuing a major in Music and a minor in Biology and plans to attend a leading institution for music composition.
Benjamin has played the piano since he was eight, under the tutelage of Elizabeth Sjolund in Virginia Beach and Kelly Gross at the University of Virginia. Over the course of his performance studies, Benjamin has closely examined works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Ginastera, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel. He has performed in thirty recitals at Old Dominion University and in five recitals at the University of Virginia. In the spring of 2010 Benjamin plans to participate in a senior recital of his own compositions for piano and chamber ensembles.
At the age of fifteen Benjamin began to teach himself to play the electric guitar. Six years and zero teachers later, Benjamin still plays the guitar regularly. Guitar performance led him to compose over 400 songs for instrumental rock ensembles and to participate in two bands: Flawless Victory, an improvisitory rock band, and The Flavor is Natural, an alternative ukelele/cajon/acoustic guitar combo.
The classical and rock influences acting on Benjamin along with his outlook on life and music have caused him to form a compositional philosophy that requires the convergence of academic music and the music that "normal" people (people without an advanced musical education) actually enjoy listening to. Benjamin feels that the intensely spiritual art of creation is not so much the act of looking within yourself to find answers as it is the act of being so in touch with the human beings around you that you can create an art which speaks to both them and yourself.
