Why bother with BibTeX?

BibTeX is an organized, efficient way to handle references for LaTeX documents. It allows many documents to draw from a common database of bibliography entries. In addition, the references and citations for a document can be easily reformatted to meet the requirements of different conferences or journals, for example, simply by calling a different bibliography style file. The graphic below sketches out a few of the possibilities of organizing your references in a BibTeX database system.
