Construction area, outside Dhaka, 1986.
This area, several square miles, provides all the raw materials
to feed Dhaka's construction appetite. Soil is brought in on
boats and made into bricks in giant kilns. These bricks in turn
are taken by boat into other areas where they are sold or crushed
to use in construction. Since the soil of Bangladesh is almost
devoid of stones, crushed bricks are used instead of rocks
for making concrete.
