| Room (2003) stereophonic tape and interactive video for dance Music and video: Peter V. Swendsen Choreography: Ashley Thorndike Dancers: Lauren Spivey and Ashley Thorndike Premiered by Prospect Dance Group at Charlottesville Fringe Festival and C^3A Open House, Fall, 2003 Also performed: - Prospect Dance Group Winter Season at PVCC Black Box, Charlottesville, VA, January, 2004 - LEC Benefit at Center for Contemporary Arts, Charlottesville April, 2004 Room seeks to establish a physical space that plays with boundaries of separation and overlap between the two dancers. Live video, processed in Isadora, adds another distinct “room” to the performance environment, as the dancers appear in a fragmented third space in which they are present, but from which they are fundamentally separated. The rhythmically layered and repetitive score is based largely on violin and guitar samples, though its slowly and constantly building texture is interrupted at times by fragments of percussive sound. |
