68 for Galleries (2003) - stereophonic tape for art gallery

First installed at Central Park Gallery in Honesdale, Pennsylvania in May, 2003.

68 for Galleries was created for Central Park Gallery’s main gallery space for the opening of Ioannis Glykokokalos’s show of paintings. The music plays on an art gallery’s unique ability to simultaneously host works of various styles, media, and ages. The gallery audience may stand back and survey this multiplicity of creative endeavors, or it may choose a particular piece on which to dwell. The music seeks to mimic these environmental and temporal characteristics of the gallery. 68 for Galleries uses sixty-eight fifteen-second fragments of music as its starting point. These fragments—one each from sixty-eight pieces I have composed since 1995—represent a wide variety of aesthetics, techniques, and technologies. They are herein manipulated to form a wash of sound (the wide gallery view) and also briefly included in their original form (the detailed view.) The result is part collage, part catalog, and aims to shape the space for Glykokokalos’s work, as the specificity of the brushstroke plays against the ephemerality inherent to music.
