Goal in taking 201: I want to experience one of the most well-known, respected classes at UVA. I want to learn the economic way of approaching the world that Professor Elzinga mentioned in the first day of classes, which will hopefully enhance my perspective on life. Future Plans: I really want to major in economics. I took the course "IB economics" at my high school and fell in love. I want to travel the world and spread economic education to lesser fortunate, third world countries in hopes to allow these countries to specialize, invest, and grow without the need foreign aid.

Future Plans: In the future I want to work for the US State Department as a Foreign Service Officer and "work my way up" to a higher level position in international embassies. While in college I'd like to study abroad to get as much exposure to different cultures/languages as possible. After graduating from the lovely University of Virginia, I'd like to take part in some sort of volunteer program (Teach for America/Peace Corps). Then I'd like to pursue a masters degree and begin working at the State Department. Of course I am only 18, so this could very well change as I learn more about my interests in college!
Goal in taking 201: My goal in taking 2010 is to revisit my feelings towards Economics. I took AP Econ in High School and enjoyed learning about every concept, as it made me feel like I understood the world so much better. Name: Elliott Carter
Email:
Hometown: Alexandria, Va
Interests: I am intersted in writing, reading; both poetry and fiction, music, and things that make me feel temporarily ignorant.
Future Plans: In my head, I see myself waking up at 900 hours every morning to write 2,000 words of fiction for the "next great american novel" that no one will know is great until after I am long gone, as most great american novels tend to behave once they are thrown out into the market. At 1200 hours, I walk over to the campus (or maybe, the grounds, again) to teach a workshop or two. Then, I go home and "revise sober" even though I was never intoxicated in the first place. The sobering part is of course that I am writing something not many people will read.
Goal in taking 201: First, I want to learn how economical thinking can be useful in writing fiction. This is especially important in a world where most literary fiction blends pop culture into the story and themes. At the same time, I want to question if that is even necessary or meaningful. Economical thinking would also be helpful for non-fiction essays in my other classes as well as if I want to publish something of that nature. Second, I want to learn how to make money from writing, not to be wealthy, but because the romantic answer is that there is nothing else I would want to do in my life.

Future Plans: I haven't decided on a major yet but the Commerce school is one of my top two options. The other is transferring into the Kinesiology school. I'm keeping my options open until I decide for sure where my passion lies. Only time will tell!
Goal in taking 201: Since I'm debating between two completely different paths, I thought taking this class would help me make up my mind. I've been very interested in economics since high school and hope that by the end of this semester I will know if its something I want to pursue further.

Interests: Hi Professor Elzinga! I am so excited to be taking your class this year and am looking forward to introducing myself in person! My interests include reading, camping, and spending time with friends and family. Here at UVA my interests include Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, University Programs Council, ULink Peer Advising, and my Christian sorority Sigma Alpha Omega for which I serve as the current secretary.
Future Plans: I hope to apply to the Batten undergraduate program and then apply to law school afterward. I am not entirely sure what I want to focus on in the law arena but hopefully something related to education or veterans affairs with the federal government.
Goal in taking 201: My goal in taking 2010 is to learn more about Microeconomics and how it can apply and does apply to my areas of interest like Politics, Public Policy, and Law. I took AP Microeconomics in high school and really enjoyed it, but didn't see it as being something pertaining to my areas of interest at the time. Now that I have a more defined focus area, I'm really looking forward to applying it to my areas of study and really just enjoying the subject as a whole.

I'm good with people and am interested in doing something that allows me to interact with all different kinds.
Future Plans: Receiving a major at UVA for some sort of international studies after having traveled abroad twice during my time here. Then I hope to go to grad school for communications and hopefully from there work for a publication or other form of media that has either everything or nothing to do with my studies. Along the way I hope to travel more and eat more and meet more, and eventually live abroad or somewhere completely new to me.
Goal in taking 201: To learn the "economic way of thinking" as Elzinga said during the first lecture. I haven't had an interest in economics before but I like learning new ways of thinking so I have an open mind about what I'll take away from this class.

Interests: Soccer, Food, Traveling, starting to get into trading stocks (trying to teach myself), also an avid sleeper.
Future Plans: Admission into Mcintire then continue onto graduate school. Hopefully by then I could get married and start my own firm of some sort but that is a long shot. I am completely focused on education right now. I want to be able to make money by myself, not have to work for someone else.
Goal in taking 201: Be able to apply the knowledge I learn into real life. I believe that actually learning the material is better than attaining a certain grade. Yes, the grade matters but I want to be able to get to the point where if someone needed help in Economics, I can be there to teach.

I'm hoping to get married at some point before the next 10 years are up too. I'm open to whatever though, since my interests can definitely change.
Goal in taking 201: My goal is to learn more about how the economy functions, since I'm pretty clueless as it is. I want to be able to open up the WSJ and actually understand some of the articles I read. My goal is also to learn whether or not I would want to continue pursuing economics in my next four years, based on how much I enjoy the material, and to begin shaping myself for either an Econ or Comm major.

Interests: education policy/reform, literature (I was very excited when you mentioned Wise Blood; I found it at a free bookstore a little while ago and have been meaning to read it!), running, music, cats, social justice
Future Plans: I don't have a clear idea yet, but I would like to work in education policy in some way. Whether it be through the government, a public policy firm, think-tank, or social entrepreneurship, I'm not sure. I'd really love to live in a city though.
Goal in taking 201: Learning about the real-world applications of economics. I took AP econ in high school last year, but only took the Macro exam. So I've had a bit of exposure to the subject, but not nearly as much as I wish to. I think the different situations you mentioned in class are really interesting, and I've found that what I do know about economics has been surprisingly useful in my everyday life. Although economics is a positive science, I think it can be used to inform normative decisions and is closely tied to larger ethical questions.
